The mild climate of the Tuscan Maremma and the warm thermal springs make the golf course of the Saturnia Thermal Baths an ideal place to play, all year round. The project was designed by the Golfplan studio architect Ronald Fream, who has also been the designer of some of the most prestigious golf courses in the world, since 1972.
The course, 18 holes extending over 6.316 metres, par 72, is gently undulated, filled with obstacles and bunkers protecting wide and deep greens. The practice course, on the other hand, located just a few metres away from the hotel, measures 33.000 square metres and, thanks to its double tee markers, allows you to play between two very suggestive views: the castle of Saturnia on one side and the gorgeous hills of the Maremma countryside on the other.
The course is just 100 metres away from the hotel and extends over 70 hectares of land. It is characterized by a few hill-like areas and some undulated fairways. The construction of such a spectacular course was made possible only thanks to full compliance with laws concerning the safeguard of local nature: here, in the early hours of the morning, it’s quite common to run into roe deer, porcupines, hares, pheasants and local bird species. The project was signed by the Californian architect Ronald Fream, from the Golfplan studio, the renowned author of some of the best known golf courses in the world, since 1972.
The philosophy behind the creation of the course is based on the idea that wellness derives from leisure: the course must be stimulating for a well-trained player while not afflicting less prepared players with hard differences in height and tough strikes. The main goal remains the conferment of the “Ecologic Certification” assigned by the Italian Golf Federation to courses designed in the name of respect for the surrounding nature.
Located between Grosseto and Capalbio, in the heart of the Maremma area, the Argentario Golf Club extends over a protected oasis of Mediterranean vegetation and can boast a unique and extraordinarily beautiful landscape. Surrounded by cork oak and centenary olive tree woods – the home of hares, squirrels and deer – you can admire places characterized by uncontaminated charm and the inebriating perfume of arbutus.
The key elements of this micro-climate – perfect for playing golf in any period of the year – are gentle slopes, the sea and the lagoon. A fabulous location combined with the sounds of nature: a stimulating and extraordinary itinerary capable of attracting and enchanting any player, regardless of his/her playing level.
The 18 championship holes designed and developed by Davide Mezzacane and Baldovino Dassù, for a total of 6.218 metres and par 71, were later modelled by Brian Jorgensen and the result is a surprisingly variegated, technically valid and undoubtedly spectacular course. The greens are almost all small, while a light wind is always present to mitigate the temperature and add a further variable to play. This course requires both precision and power.
The par 3 holes are truly marvellous: two dominate the sea and the lagoon, one is surrounded by vegetation, one offers variable difficulty levels according to the wind, while the last one is extremely delicate and spectacular, with a water surface entering the green. The splendid location and light sea breeze will guarantee a one-of-its-kind experience.
